The Skin's Moisture Loss

Moisture deficient skin has a low water content. Water trapped in the skin"s lower layers and normal perspiration hydrate the stratum corneum. If skin lacks natural moisturising factors (NMF"s) or is subjected to extreme weather conditions, it loses moisture. It becomes dry and taut, and almost unable to absorb rich creams. As it becomes less supple, its protective function reduces. The skin chaps, transepidermal water loss increases, and its barrier function is impaired. Because of its exposed position, the skin on the face loses more moisture than skin in other areas. Moisture-deficient skin is in particular need of products containing natural moisturising factors (e.g. amino acids) which, in a suitable formulation, bring about long-lasting skin hydration.

Climate influences the skin's moisture loss. The hotter and drier the outside air, the greater the skin's moisture and water loss.
