The Hydrolipid Film

An emulsion of water (hydro) and fat (lipos), the Hydrolipid film covers the skin surface acting as an external barrier defending against bacteria and fungi. Healthy skin maintains a balance between oil and moisture, which makes skin supple.

The following components are found on the skin’s surface:

  • 1 Sweat
  • 2 Sebaceous oils
  • 3 Corneocytes, horny cells still in the shedding process
  • 4 Substances from the cornification process
  • 5 Water from the deepest layers that has reached the surface (transepidermal water)
